My Lawn

I get asked a lot how I take care of my lawn. Figured I would put my method out there to help.

Rules to follow:

  • 1/3 rule:
Mow your lawn to only remove 1/3 of the plant at a time. If it has overgrown, 2 cuts over a few days is better than 1 big cut. I always keep my cuts under 1/3 to reduce the stress of the plant.

  • Sharpen your blade regularly:
Always keep the mower blade sharp as a sharp cut reduces the stress on the plant. Tearing of a dull blade will increase water loss from the plant.

  • 1.5″ of water a week:
Irrigation is key, keep a check on the local rainfall amounts and make sure the lawn is getting the minimum of 1.5″ a week.

  • Feed the lawn regularly:
Make to sure follow a good fertilizing regiment. Keep the nitrogen up to keep the lawn green. Using a liquid iron will help with the deep greening.

  • Cut High:
My height of cut is 3″ meaning I can wait till 4.5″ to cut it down. Longer lawn will look greener than a short lawn. Cutting lower will require more maintenance to keep green. If cutting lower, I would recommend using a reel mower as it will make a cleaner cut.
